Aerial photography offers a unique perspective and captivating visuals, but shooting from a helicopter requires meticulous planning and attention to detail. In this article, we’ll explore essential tips to help you achieve breathtaking aerial images from a helicopter.

Meticulous Planning:
Before embarking on your aerial adventure, scout potential shooting locations and develop a well-considered flight path. Google maps is a great place to start. Take into account factors like the time of day, weather conditions, and airspace restrictions. Communicate your requirements and preferences with the pilot to ensure smooth collaboration during the shoot.

Selecting the Ideal Helicopter:
Choose a helicopter designed for aerial photography, featuring a high-visibility cockpit such as the Robinson R44 or the Airbus H125. These models offer superior vantage points and a smoother ride, significantly improving the quality of your photos.

Perfect Timing:
To capture the most appealing natural lighting, schedule your shoot during the “golden hour” – typically an hour after sunrise or an hour before sunset.

Stabilisation:
Use a camera with image stabilisation to minimise camera shake and vibration, resulting in smoother, sharper images – crucial for capturing exceptional shots from a moving helicopter.

Choosing the Right Camera and Lens:
Select a high-quality DSLR or mirrorless camera coupled with a fast lens. Wide-angle and zoom lenses are particularly suitable for aerial photography, providing the flexibility needed to capture various subjects and scenes.

Optimising Camera Settings:
Switch your camera to manual mode, set a fast shutter speed (1/1000s or higher) to freeze motion, and maintain a low ISO to minimise noise. Adjust the aperture as needed – typically, an aperture around f/5.6 to f/8 will produce sharp images.

Shooting in RAW Format:
Capture your images in RAW format to gain greater flexibility during post-processing, enabling easier adjustments to exposure, contrast, and colours.

Utilising a Harness:
Ensure your safety and protect your equipment by securing yourself with a harness while leaning out of the helicopter to capture the perfect shot.

Maintaining Clear Communication:
Establish a strong line of communication with the pilot, discussing your desired shots and angles. Notify the pilot when you’re ready to take a photo so they can momentarily stabilise the helicopter.

Patience and Persistence:
Aerial photography can be challenging, often requiring multiple attempts to achieve the perfect shot. Embrace experimentation with various angles and compositions while taking numerous photos.

By adhering to these essential tips and prioritising safety, you’ll be well-equipped to capture awe-inspiring aerial images from a helicopter. Work closely with your pilot and remain persistent in your efforts to ensure a successful and rewarding aerial photography experience.
