As an architectural photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing numerous breathtaking images of various structures in Australia. One memorable experience was photographing the grain silos at Port Pirie, South Australia, which earned me a Silver award at the 2014 Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA). In this blog post, I’ll share the story behind this award-winning shot and how a perfect combination of an early rise, a lucky break with the weather, and my passion for photography led to a truly stunning image.

The Early Rise

I was in Port Pirie for an industrial shoot and had heard about the grain silos from some locals. Intrigued by the potential photographic opportunities, I set my alarm for an early morning shoot, hoping to catch the silos in the best light. Little did I know that the early rise would pay off significantly.

The Lucky Break

As I arrived at the location, I was greeted by a breathtaking scene: the sunrise was just beginning to break through a stormy sky, casting dramatic shadows and illuminating the silos in a warm, golden light. I knew I had a limited window of opportunity to capture this spectacular moment, so I quickly set up my camera and began shooting.

The Award-Winning Shot

With the perfect combination of light, weather, and subject, I was able to capture a truly stunning image of the grain silos at Port Pirie. The dramatic stormy sky provided a striking contrast to the warm, glowing light of the sunrise, while the silos themselves stood tall and proud, showcasing the beauty and power of industrial architecture.

The image was well-received by the judges at the 2014 APPA, and I was thrilled to be awarded a Silver award for my work. This recognition validated my passion for architectural photography and served as a reminder of the power of perseverance and the importance of seizing opportunities when they arise.

My experience in Port Pirie and the resulting award-winning photograph of the grain silos will always hold a special place in my heart. It serves as a testament to the importance of dedication, passion, and a little bit of luck in the pursuit of exceptional architectural photography. The dramatic sunrise and stormy sky that morning provided the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable image, and I am grateful for the recognition and memories that this shoot has brought me.
