I am honoured to share that in 2013; I received two silver awards at the prestigious Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA) for my documentary photographs taken in an aged care home. The APPA is renowned for recognizing and celebrating the outstanding work of photographers across Australia, and being acknowledged with not just one, but two awards, was a truly humbling experience.

The aged care home project was a deeply personal and emotional journey for me. My aim was to capture the essence of life within the care facility and portray the residents with dignity, respect, and warmth. By focusing on the intimate moments and daily interactions between the residents, staff, and family members, I was able to tell a story that transcended the boundaries of age and time. These images serve as a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of the human spirit, as well as the importance of empathy and compassion in our society.

The recognition I received at the 2013 APPA not only validated my efforts as a photographer but also helped shine a light on the often-overlooked world of aged care. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the broader conversation about aging, care, and the essential role of these facilities in our communities.

Quality aged care photography plays a crucial role in raising awareness and fostering a deeper understanding of the lives and experiences of those residing in care facilities. Through compelling and honest visual storytelling, photographers have the power to humanize aged care residents and convey their individuality, experiences, and emotions. By capturing these authentic moments, aged care photography helps to break down stereotypes and stigmas associated with aging and care facilities, paving the way for a more empathetic and compassionate society. Additionally, these photographs can also serve as valuable marketing and communication tools for aged care providers, showcasing the quality of care, warmth, and sense of community within their establishments. Overall, quality aged care photography is a vital medium for promoting connection, empathy, and understanding between the residents, their families, and the wider community.
